Biofuels for good: The emerging biofuels industry in the us could require as much land by 2050 as is currently farmed for food, said a report by a group of 22 international scientists in the October 3 issue of Science magazine. The scientists stated that the biofuels industry, if managed under a sound, science-based policy, could increase domestic energy security and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. At present, the us lacks the standards to ensure that producing biofuels won't harm the soil, cause nitrogen fertilizer pollution and a decline in biodiversity as is the case with the grain-based biofuel cropping systems. The 2008 Farm Bill provides subsidies for growers of biofuels crops and for refiners who convert these crops into ethanol.
Behind the smoke: A study by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health reported that more than 80 million people might die of lung cancer in China in the next 25 years. More than half of the men in the Chinese population smoke and more than 70 per cent of the Chinese householders use burning coal and wood for cooking and heating--the two major factors attributed to the possible deaths.
