US tightens quality control on Chinese fish

Made in China: Reputation marr On June 28, 2007, the us announced a broader import control on farm-raised fish imported from China. The class='UCASE'>us Food and Drug Administration (fda) will now check if shipments are free of residues of drugs
used in farm-raised aquatic animals that were banned in the country.

"We're taking this strong step because of current and continuing evidence that certain imported Chinese aquaculture products coming into the class='UCASE'>us contain illegal substances," said David Acheson, fda assistant commissioner for food
protection.

Due to increasing cases of contaminated food from China, from pet food to lead-painted toys, there have been many recalls. This may tarnish the
'Made in China' label and intensify calls for trade protection in the us."Quality is one thing, safety is a different matter,"
said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago.
