History Uruguay
Uruguay's school children are all gearing up to learn their nation's recent history. This is part of president Tabare Vzquez administration's human rights policy. Uruguay's recent history includes a military dictatorship responsible for forced disappearances, kidnappings and political assassinations. The application of neo-liberal policies in Uruguay will be among the other areas covered. "A community uninformed of its recent past is not able to take the present in their hands," said history professor Hugo Cores. Right-wing politicians, however, are up in arms. Former President Julio Mara Sanguinetti lamented that the professors belonged to "the left".
