Chennia to fit buses with global positioning system equipment

Chennai's Metropolitan Transport Corporation plans to fit its buses with global positioning system equipment soon. The equipment will serve many purposes including providing information about the operations, and tracking of the vehicles' movements.

Fifty buses will be fitted with the gadget which will communicate with electronic display boards in bus stops en route to provide information on status of the service, including details about crowding or lack of it in the bus. The International Institute of Information Technology, a Bangalore-based company, will provide the software for the project. The Union ministry of heavy industries has agreed to bear the entire cost of the Rs 3-crore project.
