Netting order

Kenya, which has been trying to develop its fishing industry, recently cracked down on illegal fishing in Homa Bay and Rachuonyo districts, where small-scale commercial fishing is rampant. Following a court order, Kenya's Department of Fisheries destroyed prohibited fishing gear worth us $7,100, including 26 mosquito nets, 15 beach seines and 41 two-and-half inch gill nets. These small nets catch small fish and fry and destroy breeding grounds. Fisherfolk involved in illegal fishing were arrested. The operation is to continue till proper fishing methods are restored.
