Pedestrian questions

Issue Date: Jun 30, 2013
Have you ever noticed the footpath? Does it even exist? And if it does what is its height from the road? What should be the ideal height that allows for pedestrians to walk without fear of being run over or breaking a leg clambering onto it, while not allowing cars to park and take over this public space?

Eating right to save the planet

Posted on: 4 Jun, 2013
We need to re-invent sustainable agriculture, so that it can meet the needs of millions, but does not cost us the Earth Think. Eat. Save. This is the theme of the World Environment Day 2013. What does this mean? The contention is that huge amount of food is wasted from farm to fork. If we save this ‘waste’ then we reduce our footprint on the planet’s diminishing natural resources. Sounds good. But what should you and I do to be part of this global mission?

Solar energy not war

Issue Date: Jun 15, 2013
If you know that a sector has arrived when it makes for trade wars between countries, then solar energy clearly has. Last year, the US imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese imports of solar panels; now the EU has proposed the same.

In celebration of biodiversity

Issue Date: May 31, 2013
Food is personal. We know that. What we often don’t realise is that food is also more than personal. It is also about culture and, most importantly, about biodiversity. We often do not think how the flora and fauna around us make up our culture. We do not think that food diversity, indeed cultural diversity, is linked to diversity in the biological world.

Ganga saga part II: redesign dams, not rivers

Issue Date: May 15, 2013
Engineers require re-training, not the Ganga. This is where I had left our conversation last fortnight. Why did I say this? The inter-ministerial committee I participated in as a member was discussing how much the ecological flow—the water that should be left in the river for ecosystem and livelihood purposes—should be at all times. How much water is needed for the river to be a river; and not a drain?

Adani project in Mundra has violated environmental norms: MoEF committee report

Issue Date: Apr 18, 2013
The committee set up by the environment ministry to inspect the contentious port and special economic zone (SEZ) project in Mundra, Gujarat, has found clear evidence that developer Adani Enterprises has violated certain environmental norms.

Training engineers, not Ganga

Issue Date: Apr 30, 2013
Hydropower is important. But how important? Is it important enough to dry up stretches of our rivers? Or is there a way to balance the need of energy with the imperative of a flowing, healthy river? I have been grappling with these issues for the past few months.

A green facade

Issue Date: Apr 15, 2013
Building green is definitely important. But equally important is to know how green is a green building. Take the glitzy, glass-enveloped buildings popping up across the country. It does not matter if you are in the mild but wet and windy climate of Bengaluru or in the extreme hot and dry climate of Gurgaon, glass is the in-thing.

How do you like your food, sir?

Issue Date: Mar 31, 2013
My local vegetable vendor sells ordinary lemons packed in plastic bags. It got me thinking if this is a sign of improving standards of food safety and hygiene. After all if we go to any supermarket in the rich and food-processed world, we will find food neatly packed so that there is no contamination through human hands.

Wake up and smell the air

Issue Date: Mar 15, 2013
Our health is not on anybody’s agenda. Or, we just don’t seem to make the connections between the growing burden of disease and the deteriorating condition of our environment. We don’t really believe the science, which tells us each passing day how toxins affect our bodies, leading to high rates of both morbidity and mortality.
