Why the US is such a bully

Issue Date: Apr 30, 2003
In the on-going war the us administration -- and media -- is completely unfazed about dangling us $6 billion (they say in grants) in front of the Turkish parliament in exchange for use of its territory to open another front, a strategy it also followed with Pakistan during its hunt for Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Environmentalists know better. The us is actually following a norm.

Requiem for the world we know

Issue Date: Mar 31, 2003
Recently, I met some senior British diplomats. Conversation moved to the impending war in Iraq and its "rationality". It became heated. I wish to share a piece of Bushspeak the discussion ended with, leaving me stunned. "Remember, there will be war. The us wants it. But if you are with them now, it will count afterwards." With us, or against us. No other choice.

Why Russia isn't signing Kyoto

Author(s): Neelam Singh
Issue Date: Mar 15, 2003
russia has refused to toe the us line on Kyoto Protocol -- the international agreement to control greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions. A us delegation was in Russia recently to explore possible common approaches to address climate change. But experts feel that the real purpose of the visit was to influence Russia's position on Kyoto ratification.

Russia on Kyoto

Issue Date: Sep 30, 2002
Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed his country's intention to sign the Kyoto Protocol, while pointing out certain technical hitches in the deal. Experts say the Russian ratification would virtually ensure the implementation of the treaty, despite its rejection by the US -- the biggest air polluter.

Europe deluged

Issue Date: Sep 15, 2002
it is a downpour that has left most parts of central and eastern Europe submerged in misery. Over the past few weeks, unprecedented and severe storms have triggered floods in the region, claiming more than 112 lives, rendering thousands homeless and causing damage worth more than us $21.5 billion. Authorities say the floods have shattered all prior records. The deluge has had an impact on 24 countries.

Helping hand

Issue Date: Aug 15, 2002
A us $108.8 million global fund has been raised to tackle environmental problems and nuclear waste in northwest Russia. At a recent conference in Brussels, the European Commission pledged us $50.33 million for the fund and Russia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands offered us $10.06 million each.

Thriving mafia

Issue Date: Jan 31, 2002
the Russian mafia has been accused of practising illegal fishing in the western Bering Sea. In an investigative study by Trade record analysis of flora and fauna in commerce (traffic), it is claimed that fish poaching amounting to us $ 4 billion annually is being carried out by organised crime operators. This has put the marine species in peril and contributed to the collapse of the fishery.

Green future

Author(s): Neelam Singh
Issue Date: Nov 30, 2001
countries finally managed to bring to close protracted negotiations on ways to reduce emissions of heat trapping green house gases (ghg) like carbon dioxide. The resulting agreement has no teeth and does not come close to the level of action required to arrest climate change. It instead dilutes commitments already made by countries under the Kyoto Protocol.

Germs of terror

Issue Date: Oct 15, 2001
the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, usa, have not only changed the skyline of world's business capital, but also the world's perception of terrorism.
