The maximum erosion has occurred about 250 metres north of the 17th century Aguada Fort where 25 metres of beach disappeared in two years between 2004 and 2006, said a report by the National Institute of Oceanography (nio), submitted to the state chief secretary.

Mining Restraint:The Goa bench of Bombay High Court asked mining company Sesa Goa to stop extracting iron ore in Advalpal village. The court was hearing a petition that said the village is left with no water sources and paddy fields are dry because of the mining operations. Sesa Goa is dumping waste along the nullahs, choking and contaminating them. The petition was filed by a nine-year-old boy Akash Naik and non-profit Goa Foundation.

Goa's environment ministry has ordered six mines operating close to the wildlife sanctuaries of Goa close operations. The list of mines to be closed includes an iron ore mine owned by Sesa Goa. Two mines are owned by Shantilal Khushaldas Brothers at Rivona; these mines were operating without the requisite clearances from the forest department. A mine owned by Damodar Mangalji is on land that has rock carvings said to date back 9,000 years. This mine is not on the list of mines to be closed. Mining giant Vedanta is all set to diversify into steel business. Sesa Goa Ltd in which Vedanta has the controlling share, has begun negotiations with Japanese and European companies to set up a steel plant in India. Sesa Goa, an iron ore producer, recently acquired VS Dempo and Co Ltd (another iron ore mining company in Goa) and has the capacity to produce 50 million tonnes iron ore. Anil Agarwal, chairman, Vedanta Resources, said the ore could easily feed a 10-million-tonne steel plant.

Goa government issues ordinance to save resort THE troubles faced by Goa's five star beach resort--Hotel Cidade de Goa--amount to a state emergency. At least one would think so from the Goa administration's decision to intervene in the hotel's interest. On March 2, the state governor, S S Sidhu, promulgated an ordinance amending a 114-year-old law. The amendment to the land acquisition act of 1894 has saved the hotel's illegal extensions from demolition for the time being.
