Oil’s crude touch in Gujarat

Oil wells fitted with pumping devices are a common sight in Mehsana district, north of Ahmedabad. For the state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) the district is the most prized onshore oil asset in India, producing about 40,000 barrels crude oil a day. But for farmers the wells spell ruin.

2,216 wells in 21 fields are in Ahmedabad asset 2,118 wells, 18 fields, in Mehsana 1,622 wells in 26 fields in the Ankleshwar asset 1,433 of all wells have been abandoned till date

Floods for nothing

six villages were flooded in Mehesana district of Gujarat after a 20-foot-wide breach appeared in the Narmada canal near Kadi on June 10. Three- to four-foot-deep water flooded the houses in these villages and the drinking water supply was badly hit. This was the third major breach in the canal in three consecutive years.
