In contempt

In response to a contempt of court petition, the Rajasthan High Court on January 5, 2006, directed soft drink companies Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to implement its earlier order regarding labels on soft drink bottles mentioning the pesticide residues present. The bench comprising justices Gyansudha Mishra and Jitendra Ray Goyal directed the soft drinks companies to implement the earlier court order within two weeks failing which a Supreme Court) stay order would be imposed. Swati Bhati, an advocate, filed the petition.

The state of tigers in India's national parks has caused much outcry. Justifiably so: it appears that over the last year, 22 tigers at the Sariska National Park, Rajasthan have been killed, as have a further 21 at India's "blue-riband" national park, Ranthambore -- also in Rajasthan. The animal is in perilous state in other reserves as well.

Punjab ready to share water

The Punjab government on October 27, 2005, agreed to give the full share of 8.6 million acre feet (maf) water from the Ravi-Beas river system to Rajasthan. Experts believe this could prevent acute water wars in the desert state. Earlier, Punjab agreed to release only 8 maf water to Rajasthan, less than what is prescribed under the 1981 water-sharing agreement between the two states.

Since early this year, the news on tigers vanishing from Sariska and Ranthambore, India's flagship conservation areas in Rajasthan, has dominated the media and shocked the Indian public. But few are aware of the parallel decline, rather the near-death, of India's pastoral cultures, even though it concerns the livelihoods of millions of poor people throughout India.
