Chhattisgarh activist, Ramesh Agrawal, bags Goldman prize

Indian activist Ramesh Agrawal, who has been fighting   the powerful coal-mining and power generation lobby in  Chhattisgarh for the past few years, has won the prestigious award for grassroots activism in the field of environment—the Goldman Environmental Prize, often called the “Green Nobel”.  

Green tribunal reserves order on Jindal's Raigarh power plant

The National Green Tribunal has reserved its verdict on the appeal against environmental clearance given to Jindal Power Limited (JPL) to expand its coal-based thermal power plant at Raigarh district in Chattisgarh. The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had granted the company environmental clearance to add another 1,200 MW capacity to the plant on November 15 last year.

Activists Akhil Gogoi and Ramesh Agrawal attacked

Two activists, one leading an anti-dam stir and the other land grab by industrial houses, were attacked in separate incidents. Akhil Gogoi was attacked with sticks and sharp weapons in Assam while Ramesh Agrawal was shot at in Chhattisgarh.

Green tribunal suspends environment clearance of Scania sponge iron plant in Raigarh

The National Green Tribunal has suspended the environment clearance granted to the sponge iron plant of Scania Steel and Power Ltd in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had granted environment clearance to the project in 2008 even though the mandatory public hearing was not held for it.
