Political parties come under RTI Act, says Central Information Commission

In a landmark order, the Central Information Commission (CIC) on Monday said that all political parties come under the ambit of the Right To Information (RTI) Act, and directed all parties to designate public information officers and appellate authorities at their headquarters in six weeks time.

Rs 212 crore for Omkareshwar dam oustees

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has declared a rehabilitation package worth Rs 212 crore for people displaced by the Omkareshwar dam on the river Narmada. The announcement was made late on Tuesday night.

Pakistan halts polio drive in north-west areas

Pakistan has suspended its pre-monsoon polio vaccination drive in the  north-western region of the country after a brutal attack on two female volunteers on Tuesday. One of them died and the other is critical. Health volunteer, Sharafat was killed while her teammate Sunbal Gul is battling for her life. The attack took place in Badhabher on the outskirts of Peshawar.

Scientists discover green way to produce steel

Early in May, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced the discovery of a new method of producing steel that is free of CO2 emissions. The process, known as molten oxide electrolysis (MOE), was initially employed to generate oxygen. The product generated was oxygen and, astonishingly, steel.

Green tribunal halts land acquisition for POSCO

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) which suspended the environmental clearance to the controversial POSCO steel project in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district last year, has once again stepped in to halt illegal work on the controversial project. In the past fortnight, Korean steel manufacturer POSCO, aided by state government of Odisha, acquired 2,700 acres (one acre equals 0.4 hectare) of agricultural land, including betel vines, in Jagatsinhpur district without waiting for the mandatory environmental clearance.
