A collection of fossil bones, some dating back 40,000 years, jut out of the natural asphalt at Tar Pit 91, the only active urban excavation site in the world at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. It remains open for two months a year, when scientists and volunteers descend 4.5-metre underground to remove, clean and catalogue a baffling array of Ice Age biodiversity. This season it will be open from June 25 to September 11.

Thailand dumps 189 garbage trucks for artificial reef

Thailand has dumped at least 189 old garbage trucks off its southern coast, in a bid to build an artificial reef to lure fish for local fishermen. The trucks, once used to collect refuse in Bangkok, were dropped into the Gulf of Thailand, about 5.5 km from the southern province of Pattani.

Sikkim government to recruit villagers as mountain guardians

The Sikkim government has decided to recruit villagers as honorary mountain guardians or Himal Rakshaks. The decision has already been notified in the state gazette, which says that only villagers with high concern for wildlife conservation and "clean personal records residing in high altitude regions will be recruited for the posts".
