When completed, it will be India’s biggest lift irrigation project. Nineteen mammoth lifts will pull water from the Pranahita and Godavari rivers; there will be seven large reservoirs, big pumping stations, canals and tunnels spanning 1,060 km.

Show cause notices to 11 Nashik factories for polluting Godavari

The Maharastra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued show cause notices to 11 plastic and food processing factories in Nasik for polluting the Godavari river. The industries were found releasing their untreated effluent into the river and have been given 15 days to respond.   These factories have been charged with violating Section 33 (A) of the Water Pollution (Prevention and Control) Act of 1974. The show cause notices were issued on August 29 after MPCB visited the area. The factories were releasing effluents into the river along the Tigrania road in Tapovan.

Even as Andhra Pradesh is waging a legal battle against Maharashtra’s Babli project and eleven other barrages across the Godavari river, Maharashtra has agreed to its neighbour’s proposal for constituting an Inter State Board (ISB) for implementing the Rs 40,300 crore mega Pranhita-Chevella lift irrigation project. With this green signal, Andhra Pradesh has overcome a major hurdle in making its dream project a reality.
