It has been a year since Anil Agarwal, the founder editor of Down To Earth, passed away. We remember him every moment. We work as his proxies. We work his dreams; they have become ours, too. His ideas changed many around the world. He changed the way we think. But he also left behind unfinished business. His ideas have changed policies, but not practices. Not as much as his restless energies desired to.

the 'green ratings', a public audit exercise of the caustic-chlorine sector conducted by New Delhi-based non-governmental organisation (ngo) Centre for Science and Environment (cse), has been pronounced by the industry as a guide to improve their performance in the future. The ratings, which assessed the environmental performance of the sector, were released on September 2, 2002.

The Green Rating Project carried out by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) (Down To Earth, Vol 10, No 13, November 30, 2001) has apparently forced the automobile industry to take a closer look at the problem of vehicular pollution. This was evident at a CSE workshop on March 15, 2002, which was held as a follow-up of the ratings awarded by the project to automobile companies. Representatives from all auto majors participated in the meeting.

As we have often said before, the Indian automobile industry has come of age. But in terms of environmental management, even the giants prefer to remain greenhorns. This is reflected in the last auto fair that took place in the capital. Ostensibly, they talked about "going green". Yet none of the participating companies appeared to have taken that extra stride. The focus was on new and fancy models. There was virtually no effort to sell us the value for fuel or emission efficiency in our vehicles.
