By 2020, it has to prepare for the thorium-based third phase of the nuclear programme. If this doesn't begin on time, the programme would turn out to be a colossal waste of national resources since Independence. Thorium, the government says, is a boon.

The Mahajans, a family of four who live in Vasant Kunj, South Delhi, daily waste 240 litres of water to get 30 litres from their reverse osmosis (RO) purifier six times a day. "I bought the purifier thinking it will end all our water woes. It gives us clean drinking water but I feel guilty about the waste," says Meenakshi Mahajan. 'Experts' have informed the family that the wastage is quite normal for such water-cleaning gadgets.

On january 13, the Union environment ministry imposed restrictions on new industries in critically polluted areas. The ministry had assessed 88 industrial areas across the country and identified 43 as critically polluted. Projects to set up new industries or to expand the existing ones in these areas have been put on hold till August 2010, after which the ministry will review the situation.

Industrial units get closure notice over pollution

On January 24, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, gpcb, asked 15 polluting industrial units in Ankleshwar to close down. The regulatory body said the units violated environmental and pollution control guidelines. There are some major companies in the list including United Phosphorous, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Lupin and Wockhardt. gpcb officials said the units did not treat effluents under norms. The companies did not operate their treatment plants efficiently.
