River Pollution

Letters - June 16-30, 2013

Issue Date: Jun 30, 2013
Solar catches dust As a renewable energy expert I welcome some of the views expressed in the article, “India’s power mess” (May 1-15, 2013). There is no doubt that solar energy would be the future of energy, especially as a decentralised power source. The big question, however, is whether it is worthwhile for a developing country like India to go for solar power in a big way. Cheap and efficient equipment is the only way to make solar power production sustainable.

It is claimed to be an exemplary project. It has won two awards for excellence in innovativeness and urban planning; one from the Prime Minister’s Office. Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, recently hailed it as his big achievement. He pitted the restoration of the river Sabarmati in Ahmedabad against the poor record of the Delhi government in looking after the Yamuna, the capital’s lifeline river. The media has showered praise on the project. Claims apart, what are the facts on the ground?

People come to worship on the banks of the Ganga.

The Maharastra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued show cause notices to 11 plastic and food processing factories in Nasik for polluting the Godavari river. The industries were found releasing their untreated effluent into the river and have been given 15 days to respond.   These factories have been charged with violating Section 33 (A) of the Water Pollution (Prevention and Control) Act of 1974. The show cause notices were issued on August 29 after MPCB visited the area. The factories were releasing effluents into the river along the Tigrania road in Tapovan.
