A team of researchers from the us and New Zealand has found penguin chicks in the Antarctic covered in oil. It has completed an environmental survey of a former Antarctic research station at Cape Hallett and recommended steps to safeguard penguin chicks from melt pools contaminated with oil from an unknown source. The team discovered the pools during a site visit in January 2001. The oil they believes has come from petroleum residues found in about a dozen small melt pools on the site.

Brazil's public ministry will file a lawsuit against Petrobras, the country's state oil company. They will demand a compensation of us $1.1 billion for a four million-litre oil spill in July 2000 that affected the Iguazu River (see Down To Earth , Vol 9, No 7, August 31, 2000, p11).

A recent massive oil and fertiliser spill off Sri Lanka's southern coast has triggered a grave ecological and humanitarian crisis. "The pollutants have spread over an area of eight square kilometres along the coastline. This has threatened the marine life. Every day fisherfolk remove several tonnes of dead fish from the surface.

SOUTH AFRICA

More than half of the total African penguin population, which was on the verge of dying, were saved due to the efforts of thousands of people. The penguins of the Dassen Island and the Robben Island, had faced a threat of extinction when oil from a sunken ship had leaked on June 23, 2000, leading to a 1,100-tonne oil slick which engulfed their colonies.

KILLING SLICKS

Continuos oil slicks and coastal water pollution off the Chittagong coast of Bangladesh are reported to have killed 160 species of rare fishes and aquatic plants. Research has also indicated that oil spills are affecting the reproductive cycle of certain species. Oil spills from tankers cruising through the Bay of Bengal is very common. Apart from the spills, the tankers also discharge their used oil into the sea water disregarding all regulatory provisions.

An oil spill of about 100 litres of crude oil has been reported from one of the refineries of Petrobras, Brazil's oil giant. The spill is spread over an area of 2 square kilometres, off the coast of northeastern Ceara state. Petrobras officials are trying to remove the oil stain with chemicals.
