Diesel

Reverse effect

Issue Date: Nov 30, 2001
Fuels dictate emissions. As established by a number of international studies, grp too found the toxicity of diesel emissions far exceed that of petrol emissions. And vehicles fuelled by diesel have left most companies in the lurch as far as final ratings are concerned.

Taking India for a ride

Issue Date: Nov 30, 2001
'What's good for the West is too good for India' seems to be the motto driving multinational automobile majors. Or else why would they dump Euro ii compliant cars in India, and at the same time introduce their state-of-the-art Euro iii and Euro iv versions in Europe and the us?

Time To Introspect

Issue Date: Nov 30, 2001
Take a look around, if the roadside sign "stop pollution" is too hazy to read, it's because the government, indusry and the public are to blame. The government will not tax the polluting vehicles, the industry won't innovate and the public will not ask for its right to clean air.

Is Naik serious about Auto Fuels Policy?

Author(s): Anil Agarwal
Issue Date: Sep 30, 2001
The ministry of petroleum has cleverly reduced air pollution control to a high school debate on compressed natural gas (cng) versus diesel. What "alternatives" farce

Author(s): Anil Agarwal
Issue Date: Sep 15, 2001
For a nation that invented the zero and is so proud of its prowess in information technology, we seem to be completely clueless about the difference that one zero or two zeroes can make to a number. Take the confusion, deliberately created, on the alternative to CNG - the wonderfully "clean" diesel. Proponents talk publicly that ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) as an easier and cleaner alternative.

Cosmetic concern

Author(s): Anil Agarwal
Issue Date: Jul 15, 2001
Petroleum minister Ram Naik typifies everything that is wrong with our political system today -- a system which formulates public policies not because of public good but because of political lobbies. In the last few days, newspapers have carried articles by Ram Naik praising the use of ethanol as a blend for petrol and possibly even for diesel. This step will help sugar farmers, the sugar industry, foreign exchange outflows (by cutting down on imports) and will also be environment-friendly, Naik tells us as glibly as he can.

The CNG route

Issue Date: May 31, 2001
the Delhi cng drama is about to be re-enacted in Mumbai. But there is a difference. Like the Supreme Court in Delhi, the Mumbai high court has taken the initiative to clean up the air of India's commercial capital.

Clean call

Issue Date: May 31, 2001
on april 27, 2001, the apex court gave the Bhure Lal Committee four weeks to decide on exactly which fuels could be categorised as 'clean'. They would be taking all types of fuels into consideration like compressed natural gas ( cng ), liquefied petroleum gas ( lng) , diesel and petrol. The issue came up in court in the context of the order passed on March 26, 2001, where the three-judge bench had announced that petrol with one per cent benzene would be considered as a clean fuel.
