The ministry of petroleum has cleverly reduced air pollution control to a high school debate on compressed natural gas (cng) versus diesel. During the recent meeting with prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Union government dismissed the plea for an ordinance to override the Supreme Court orders to convert Delhi's bus fleet to cng .

In the last few days, newspapers have carried articles by Ram Naik praising the use of ethanol as a blend for petrol and possibly even for diesel. This step will help sugar farmers, the sugar industry, foreign exchange outflows (by cutting down on imports) and will also be environment-friendly, Naik tells us as glibly as he can.

on april 27, 2001, the apex court gave the Bhure Lal Committee four weeks to decide on exactly which fuels could be categorised as 'clean'. They would be taking all types of fuels into consideration like compressed natural gas ( cng ), liquefied petroleum gas ( lng) , diesel and petrol. The issue came up in court in the context of the order passed on March 26, 2001, where the three-judge bench had announced that petrol with one per cent benzene would be considered as a clean fuel.
