Come out and claim the road

Issue Date: Nov 30, 2013
I write this column from my bed, recovering from an accident that broke my bones. I was hit by a speeding car when cycling. The car fled the scene, leaving me bleeding on the road. This is what happens again and again, in every city of our country, on every road as we plan without care for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. These are the invisible users.

Bhutan’s experiments with happiness

Author(s): Nitya Jacob
Issue Date: Oct 31, 2013
Tucked away in the Himalaya to the north-east of India is a tiny country that has taken the world by surprise. About 40 years ago, Bhutan, then a medieval Buddhist kingdom, opened its borders and joined the modern world. But it did not lose the balance. Instead, it gained an almost mythical status, largely for its pursuit of an elusive concept—national happiness. Hope in jaywalkers

Author(s): Garga Chatterjee
Issue Date: Oct 15, 2013
“I have been to Houston and other American cities. Europe too. Traffic is fast. People wait for the traffic signal to walk. They are disciplined. There are few people walking anyways. When will Kolkata become like that? May be never. Not with people like this. Not with so many people. They are not fit for a modern city.”

Travellers on an eco-friendly road

Issue Date: Mar 31, 2013
The bus rapid transit (BRT) system is often held as an affordable and sustainable public transport option in rapidly urbanising cities of capital-deficit developing countries like India. However, it seems to be going the way of other worthwhile projects that become “holy cows”. We hesitate to evaluate BRT critically for fears of playing into the hands of the Metro lobby.

A tale of two cities

Issue Date: Oct 31, 2012
I travelled to two different cities in two different states last week—Indore and Guwahati. I came back with images identified by common distinctions: piles of garbage and glitzy new shopping malls. Is this our vision of urban development? There is no question that cities are imploding; growth is happening faster than we ever imagined.
