a child's height may not be entirely governed by his/her genes. The quality of water the child drinks is also a deciding factor. As per a study by researchers from the us-based Johns Hopkins University, children from the poor communities of Peru are nearly one centimetre shorter than kids having access to clean water and sanitation facilities. According to the researchers, lack of clean water increases the incidences of diarrhoea, which in turn leads to malnutrition.

Issue Date: May 31, 2003
The Swajaldhara and similar schemes focus on constructing water supply installations before ensuring that there is somebody to manage them and pay for their operation. The urgency to provide safe drinking water most often leads to bypassing existing local institutions of resource management. The result is well known: the expected level of service is not reached and the invested capital erodes as gradual deterioration of facilities takes place.
