Author(s): Biplab Das

HAZARDOUS pesticides are often found, in small amounts, all around us. High vitamin intake can minimise the damage they can cause, say researchers. It can work as an effective antidote to pesticides’ toxicity.

Pesticides in our food

Issue Date: Dec 31, 2003
There is never any end to learning. And so, surprises. We have learnt, over 20 years, that environmental governance in India is lackadaisical. Still, the extent of irresponsibility never fails to surprise.

The Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) places in the public domain its analysis of the contents of 12 cold drink brands sold in Delhi. Pesticide residues in bottled water

Issue Date: Feb 15, 2003
There was a time in the recently liberalised past when people didn't quite know how to refer to a new product called drinking water. They would say 'bottled water' and 'mineral water' to freely refer to one or the other kind of water, perhaps meaning the same one. It used to be confusing. People were not used to drinking water that had to be bought. People were getting used to paying money to drink water. Paying more money for their water than they did for milk everyday.

Issue Date: Jun 30, 2008
locusts move in swarms to save their butts. Literally, say researchers from the us, the uk and Australia. They are a menace for crops, because they move around in swarms. But their collective movement is hardly a sign of unity.

Asthama's female bias

Issue Date: Feb 29, 2008
it is believed that women who grow up on farms have a strong immunity and face a lower risk of allergies than those who don't grow up on farms. A study has found that farm women may be at a risk of contracting allergic asthma--the reason is pesticides. The chemicals lower resistance levels to allergens, says the first-of-its-kind study that tracked about 26,000 women in North Carolina and Iowa, usa.
