Commendable emergency response to cyclone Fani saved lives in Odisha, but now the state must build climate-resilient structures to minimise long-term cost of reconstruction. 
April storms are rare and are usually extremely severe; the last such storm, Cyclone Nargis, devastated Myanmar in 2008. 
Odisha, which is bracing up for the extremely severe cyclone that’s predicted to make landfall on May 3, faces two natural disasters every year. 
The weather agency had put the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on red alert (highest) on April 30 and May 1. This was when the storm was towards Tamil Nadu. But it ultimately made landfall in Puri. .png)
