CoP26 is ending in two days but climate action is proceeding at snail’s pace
The 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at Glasgow is due to end in two days. Despite several Net Zero declarations, policy implementation advances at snail’s pace, claimed research group Climate Action Tracker. It estimated that current policies would take end-of-century warming to 2.7 degrees Celsius. Chart by Climate Action Tracker.
Targets for 2030 remain totally inadequate, according to Warming Projections Global Update released recently. The current 2030 targets (without long-term pledges) put the world on track for a 2.4°C temperature increase by the end of the century. Chart by Climate Action Tracker.
Even with all the new Glasgow pledges for 2030, the world will emit roughly twice as much in 2030 as required for 1.5°. Therefore, all governments need to reconsider their targets, the report urged. Chart by Climate Action Tracker.
Global warming outlook improved since Paris 2015, the report said. It had come down to 2.7°C. If governments were to achieve their 2030 nationally determined contribution targets and binding long-term targets, temperature increase could be limited to 2.1°C, it added. The Climate Action Tracker also evaluated the net zero targets of a number of countries. It found that most net zero targets were formulated vaguely and did not yet conform with good practice across different design elements. Chart by Climate Action Tracker.
