Packaged or canned food items available in India can spoil your health. A global survey has said that compared to other countries of the world, Indian packaged food samples have been found to have higher saturated fat, total sugar and energy density, which not only increases the risk of obesity and type-2 diabetes. Promotes but is also becoming the main cause of heart disease related diseases.

Packaged food and drinks available in India have been found to have very high energy content (up to 1515 kilojoules per 100 grams). At the same time, the highest amount of sugar in the samples was found in the food and beverages of China, followed by India at second place. In the samples from China, the total sugar content was found to be 8.5 grams per 100 grams whereas in India, the sugar content was found to be 7.3 grams per 100 grams. According to the survey, their nutrition was also found to be very low. Its results have been published in the journal Obesity Reviews. Click here to see the results in the journal.

According to the George Institute for Global Health, the Institute for Research in Healthcare and Medicine, this survey has been done on the basis of testing more than 4 lakh food and beverage product samples from 12 countries. Countries are given numbers based on the Health Star Rating System. In these, the amount of salt, sugar, saturated fat, protein, calcium, fiber, energy etc. necessary for nutrition in food and beverage products has been tested. Dangerous saturated fats are most commonly found in packaged foods and beverages from China.

Five stars are given to those whose products are the healthiest and half a star is given to those whose products are the least healthy. India is at the bottom of this queue. India has got a rating of 2.27. While China has been given a rating of 2.43, Chile has been given a rating of 2.44. In terms of best packaged food and beverages, the UK (2.83 star rating) is at the top, followed by the United States (2.82) and then Australia (2.81).

The lead author of the survey, Elizabeth Dunford, has said in her statement that globally we are getting addicted to highly processed food. The aisles of our supermarkets are filled with products containing bad fats, sugar, excessive salt etc. These have immense potential to make us sick. Unfortunately, the poorest countries are not able to talk about this and are having to bear the brunt of unhealthy food that lacks nutrition. It has also been suggested in the survey study that policy makers and the industrial world should look in this direction. They should make their products more nutritious and with least harm to health. The product should be designed especially keeping in mind obesity and other lifestyle diseases.
