Adispute over how many people die from exposure to asbestos has led to a spat between UK’s Advertising Standards Authority and the health department. A series of radio advertisements on asbestos claimed about 4,000 people died each year between 2004 and 2006. A complainant, whose name was not disclosed, claimed the ads exaggerated the danger as most deaths occurred due to exposure a long time ago to more dangerous types of asbestos that have since been banned. The advertising authority concluded “the ads present as definitive figures which were, in part, based on estimates.” UK’s health department countered, “Our advertising is based on the same robust statistical evidence and scientific understanding that underpins government policy.”
