US car fleet shrinks: The US, the world’s biggest petroleum user, scrapped 14 million automobiles and bought 10 million in 2009, shrinking the country’s car and light duty truck fleet to 246 million from a record 250 million, said a report by non-profit Earth Policy Institute.
Evolution hotspots: Scientists, after studying 540 million years of fossil records, said coral reefs have given rise to almost double the species in the marine ecosystem than other tropical marine habitats. Coral reefs are often termed as rainforests in terms of biodiversity. Earlier it was thought that the reef-dwelling animals had migrated from other marine habitats.
