the Union ministry of environment and forests has proposed to set up a forest development agency on the lines of district rural development authority ( drda ). Funds from the Centre for Forests and Wildlife Conservation and afforestation programmes will be provided through the agency instead of the state governments. It is felt that this move will reduce red tape and corruption. The immediate impact of the agency will be quick availability of funds for implementing conservation programmes. The agency will ensure better coordination between Union government, state governments and wildlife park authorities. The agency will also bring about uniformity in policies across the states. Either the district forest officer or conservator of forests at the district level will head the agency at the district level. The Union environment minister has asked the state forest ministers to pursue the proposal.
