Last year, Moscow’s top court banned gay-pride parades for 100 years. But it only took a year for gay rights supporters to offer a creative response. On June 30, they organised a virtual parade through the streets of Moscow to coincide with the famous Gay Pride march in New York. Yelena Goltsman of RUSA LGBT, an advocacy group in New York for Russian gays and one of the organisers, said her group carried a special geolocation app in the march. The app was synced in real time with a route in downtown Moscow using Google mapping. When the group took a step in New York, a rainbow path moved a step forward through the virtual Moscow streets on virtualpride.org.
