The Andhra Pradesh high court has directed the state government not to permit shrimp culture, prawn culture or any type of aquaculture without the prior permission of the competent authority. As a result, anyone owning aquaculture farms will now have to obtain permission, even if his/her land does not fall within the Costal Regulation Zone (see Down To Earth , Vol 9, No 22; April 15, 2001, p16). The judgment is expected to improve the environmental scenario in the many districts.
