As told to Parliament (February 9, 2022): Chapters on agriculture added to NCERT curriculum

Concerns related to agriculture, including solutions to the challenges, have been incorporated in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) science curriculum for Classes VI-X and biology textbooks for Classes XI and XII, said Subhas Sarkar, Union minister of state education, in the Rajya Sabha February 9, 2022. 

A chapter on the agricultural challenges has also been included in NCERT’s class XII geography textbook, he added. 

Over 9,000 suicides due to unemployment

More than 25,000 Indians died by suicide due to either unemployment or indebtedness between 2018 and 2020, Nityanand Rai, Union Minister of State for home affairs told the Rajya Sabha. He cited the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data till 2020 published in Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India

As many as 9,140 people died by suicide due to unemployment and 16,091 due to bankruptcy or indebtedness during the time period, Rai added.

Nutrition manufacturing units

For transparency, efficiency and accountability in the delivery of supplementary nutrition, streamlined guidelines were issued January 13, 2021 for states / Union territories, Smriti Zubin Irani, Union minister for women and child development told the Rajya Sabha.

The guidelines seek to ensure quality of supplementary nutrition and lay down procedures for procurement, identify roles and responsibilities of duty holders, integrate Ayush concepts and ensure data management and monitoring through the 'Poshan Tracker', she added.

Call for green fuel research 

Research proposals in the area of green fuels, including green hydrogen, will be invited under the India-Denmark Science, Technology and Innovation agreement, Jitendra Singh, Union minister of state (independent charge) for science, technology and earth sciences told the Lok Sabha.

This call for proposals is aligned with the Green Strategic Partnership – Action Plan 2020-2025, agreed upon by the two Prime Ministers, the Joint Committee of the two countries announced January 14, 2022.

Rise in heavy rainfall in Kerala

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted an increase in heavy downpour of rains in Kerala in the past five years, Singh told the Lok Sabha. During this period, the highest number of heavy rainfall incidences was observed in the year 2018, he added.
