Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation of an ambitious 300-megawatt (mw), coal-fired power plant project at Barapukaria in the country's northern district of Dinajpur late last month. This small southeast Asian nation is trying desperately to increase its power output from the current 1,700 mw to make up a daily shortfall of about 300 mw, according to official figures. The new power plant, to be built at an estimated cost of us $100 million, would acquire coal from a nearby mine which is currently being developed.
