As part of its efforts to check the growing pollution, the government has made lead-free petrol available throughout the country. Petroleum minister Ram Naik gave this information while addressing the valedictory function of Oil Conservation Fortnight 2000 recently. The minister said the government was also planning to introduce 0.05 per cent sulphur content motor spirit and diesel with effect from April 1 this year in the national capital region. This type of fuel would be available in the other metropolitan cities for which the ministry was finalising a plan of action. "The ministry is conscious and pro-active in taking action to reduce pollution and to improve safety and efficiency in the fuels which are being used by the public.

The supply of high speed diesel with a 0.25 per cent sulphur content all over the country has already commenced from January 1, this year.
