garlic safety: Researchers from UK's Liverpool John Moores University claim that a garlic supplement may reduce the risk of heart attacks in patients with coronary problems.

Led by Khalid Rahman and Gordon Lowe, the scientists found aged garlic extract decreases the chances of formation of blood clots. The extract targets blood platelets that cause clotting. In healthy people, platelets move freely. But in older patients who typically experience cardiovascular disease, platelets are less mobile and can 'stick together' causing a clot.

earth theory: Earth's continents most likely were in place soon after the planet was formed, claims a new study by an international team of researchers. This is in contrast to a long-held theory that the early planet was either moon-like or dominated by oceans.

The team, led by Mark Harrison of the Australian National University, came to the conclusion following analysis of a rare metal element known as hafnium in ancient minerals from the Jack Hills in Western Australia, which date to almost 4.4 billion years ago.

ozone effect: Babies born to women exposed to high ozone levels during pregnancy are at high risk of being underweight, say researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Such women are at particular risk for having babies afflicted with intra uterine growth retardation, says Frank D Gilliland, the study's senior author. Each increase of 12 parts per billion of average daily ozone levels over a mother's entire pregnancy was associated with a drop of 47.2 grammes in a baby's birth weight.
