Orissa reeled under an intense heat wave in the third week of April with unofficial death toll due to sunstroke reaching 36. Several places in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Anugul and Talcher districts recorded a maximum temperature of 46oC--seven degrees above the normal temperature usually experienced around this time of the year. Around the same time, western Washington was hit with record low temperatures and unusual snowfall. Temperatures at certain places like Seattle dropped to -22oC, breaking the previous record low temperature by seven degrees.
