Debris and silt from Ruise nala flattens 12 houses
A cloudburst in Jakhnali village of Ghansali area of Tehri Garhwal in Uttarakhand, in the wee hours of Thursday claimed six lives and critically injured one person.
The cloudburst at about 3 am on Thursday triggered a landslide that flattened houses. Those who died in the mishap included three women and two children in Netar village. The rescue operation began early in the morning. According to the district magistrate of Tehri, Yugal Kishore Pant, the bodies have been recovered while efforts are being made to repair the damage caused to the houses in the area. About a dozen other people who were injured in the incident were given first aid and those with critical injuries were referred to the Dehradun hospital.
The district disaster management officer, Ashis Semwal, said that the rains had been incessant in the area and he cloudburst occurred because of which Ruise nala (drain) got near Netar village swelled and brought down with it large quantity of silt and debris. The debris flatted more than 12 houses in the area. He also said that some of the people are reported missing in the village and there is high possibility that they could be buried in the debris.
Meanwhile, meteorological department has issued an alert for heavy rainfall in the region for the next 24 hours.
