Coronavirus update: Centre tells Bengal it has highest mortality rate

West Bengal’s mortality rate from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) of 12.8 per cent was the highest in the country, a central team told the state May 4, 2020. DTE earlier reported that the stat’s death rate was the highest.

• By May 4, 2020 evening, West Bengal’s official death count was 35 from 963 cases.
• India’s total death toll was 1,389 from 42,836 cases, 29,685 of whom were active. 
• Germany, which has reportedly managed the pandemic better than some of its European neighbours, may have 10 times the number of cases than its official count, the Guardian daily reported quoting researchers.  
• Japan has extended its state of emergency amid fears of a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.
• United States President Donald Trump predicted his country’s death toll to reach up to 100,000, but hoped a vaccine would be ready by the year-end. Already, more than 68,600 people have died in the US.
• It was followed by Italy (nearly 29,000) the United Kingdom (about 28,500), Spain (more than 25,000) and France (around 25,000). 
• By May 4 evening, the global spread was:

• COVID-19 kept extracting an economic and social cost amid reports of migrant workers clashing with police personnel, job losses, a record low factory output and losses in the equities market as India ended its countrywide lockdown and issued phased relaxations.
• A political battle broke out over stranded migrants being charged for train travel even as Indian National Congress announced it would bear such costs and slammed the Centre for not doing so.  
• International markets also remained jumpy amid tension between the United States and China, weak oil prices and redued manufacturing.
• Former United States top sleuth Mike Pompeo said on camera there was “significant evidence” that SARS-CoV-2 emerged from a Wuhan lab, but didn’t table any evidence. News agency Reuters reported that the United Kingdom also said that China had “questions to answer”. 
• The European Union, meanwhile, indicated that Bulgaria, the UK, Poland, Romania and Sweden hadn't yet touched their COVID-19 peaks.
• The world’s total count of cases positive to the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was 3,567,001 on May 4 morning, according to aggregator Worldometers.info.
• The ensuing disease has cost 248,312 lives.
• Until now, 1,157,009 patients have recovered.
• The number of active cases was at 2,161,680.
• The proportion of serious / critical patients dropped to 2 per cent. It was once as high as 5 per cent.

• India’s total case count reached 42,533.
• Of them, 29,453 were active cases.
• Until now, 11,706 patients were cured / discharged.
• The death toll was at 1,373.
