Heritage tag for Agra: SC seeks report

The Supreme Court on February 13 asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file the vision document for Taj Mahal preservation within two weeks. Further the SC when informed by the Additional Advocate General representing Uttar Pradesh that the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), Ahmedabad, has requested for six months’ time to submit a report with regard to declaring Agra as a heritage city ordered for an interim report to be submitted by CEPT within eight weeks.

NGT orders Boudh distillery to get permission

The National Green Tribunal on February 12 ordered Boudh Distillery Private Limited to get necessary permission from the Forest Department under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 and until then the interim order of the Tribunal cancelling the lease of the distillery would stay in place. The matter relates to construction of a distillery and laying of water pipes through Gramya jungle in Boudh district of Odisha. According to the applicants, it is a forest land and without getting prior permission from the Forest Department to use the land for non forestry purpose as required under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, the project should not have been started and consent to establish should not have been granted to the industry by authorities in the area.

Gammon India and Hindustan Construction fined for environmental damage

Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and K Ramakrishan of the National Green Tribunal on February 12 ordered Gammon India Limited and the Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd. to pay an interim compensation of Rs 1 crore each for damage to the environment caused in the course of four-laning of National Highway from Udhampur to Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir. They were also asked to furnish a Performance Guarantee for improving the situation within the next three months in the sum of Rs 1 crore each.

Submit report on mining leases around Balaram Sanctuary: NGT

The National Green Tribunal directed the Director, Department of Mining and Gujarat government to submit a report on the mining leases which are around Balaram Ambaji Wildlife Sanctuary and also their distances from the boundary of the sanctuary. The Tribunal passed this order on February 11 while hearing a case in the matter of Ashok Shrimali Vs Union of India & Others.

NGT fines Delhi government Rs 5 lakh for failure to check noise pollution

The Delhi government was asked by the National Green Tribunal on February 12 to deposit a sum of Rs 5 lakh with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) within one week for its failure in controlling noise pollution as per statutory mandate of Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. A month’s time was granted to the authorities to file a compliance report. The Tribunal through its previous order had directed the Chief Secretary, Delhi, the Commissioner of Police, Delhi and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to take steps for enforcing the directions of the Supreme Court with regard to use of loud speakers, control of vehicular noise and creation of awareness.
