NGT directs CPCB to ascertain the sustainability of stone crushing units in Anantapur villages

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on January 16 ordered for a team to be constituted comprising experts from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to find out the number of stone mining and crusher units in villages of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh as well as the sustainability impact of such units in the surrounding villages and the effects on the environment.

Supreme Court warning on disability access

The Supreme Court on January 15 expressed its unhappiness at the lacklustre attitude of the states and Union Territories with regard to complying with the directions of the apex court’s December 15, 2017 order and subsequent orders whereby the states as well as the Union Territories were directed to file plans for accessibility in the built environment, transportation systems, and information and communication services for persons suffering from different disabilities. The top court gave a last opportunity for providing information in the requisite format which should also include stipulation of target dates.

Disposal of E-waste on the Ramganga’s banks in Moradabad to begin soon: NGT informed

The interim progress report submitted by the state of Uttar Pradesh before the NGT on January 16 states that the work for the permanent treatment and disposal in the Treatment Storage Disposal Facility of e-waste on the banks of the Ramganga river has been allotted to M/s. Sangam Mediserve Private Limited and the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board had granted Consent to Establish for the same. The Environment Impact Assessment has also been undertaken.

SC asks Odisha to look into the proposal of re-grassing after termination of mining activities

The Supreme Court on January 16 asked Odisha to look into the matter of re-grassing upon termination of mining activities and make appropriate suggestions for implementing this proposal. The counsel appearing for the Union of India informed the apex court that this would also be included as a part of the National Mining Policy 2019 which was being formulated by them.

Probe dumping of solid waste along the banks of the Kali: NGT directs UPPCB

The National Green Tribunal on January 16 heard the case of dumping of solid waste taking place in village Ganwri  on the banks of the Kali river in Meerut district leading to health issues. NGT was told that 22 deaths have taken place and 200 people have been taken ill on account of the Kali river’s pollution.

NGT seeks report on mining by Indian Rare Earths Limited in Kerala’s Kollam district

Taking cognizance of the reports published in the Indian Express and Mathrubhumi on the unscientific mining by Centre Rare Earths Limited and Kerala Minerals and Metal Limited along the coastal area of Kollam, the NGT on January 16 directed the district magistrate of Kollam and Kerala State Pollution Control Board to look into the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with law and furnish a factual and action taken report to the NGT within one month.
