COVID-19 vaccine update: Nearly 35 million jabs administered in India so far

India administered as many as three million shots of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine March 16, 2021 — the highest in a single day so far— reported the Times of India daily.

  • The total number of jabs administered so far was nearly 35 million, according to the Union health ministry. Out of this, 15 million crore health and frontline workers have received at least the first dose, and nearly 6.1 million workers have received the second dose as well.
  • China announced that it will start regular visa services for those administered the Chinese vaccine, reported TOI. No Chinese vaccine is available in India, which is a point of concern for hundreds of students and workers waiting to resume studies there, reported.
  • The Union government will acquire 100 million doses of Oxford-AstreZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from the Pune-based Serum Institute of India, according to news agency Press Trust of India. Each dose will cost Rs 157.7.
  • The Delhi government is planning to open its vaccination drive to people aged 45-59 years with no co-morbidities by April-end, The Indian Express reported. At least 38, 437 people were inoculated on March 16 in the national capital.
  • About 392 million doses have been administered across 128 countries, according to data collected by Bloomberg. The latest rate was roughly 9.50 million doses a day.
  • As many as 111 million doses have been administered to people in the United States. As many 33.36 doses have been administered per 100 people there, according to Bloomberg data.
  • The US is followed by China, where 64,980,000 doses have been administered so far.
  • India reported 28,869 cases of COVID-19 March 16, the highest single-day spike in about three months, according to covid19india.org. Of these, 17,864 cases were reported from Maharashtra. The world so far has reported 121,278,367 cases of COVID-19; 2,682,258 people have died.
  • The Gujarat government has extended night curfew in four cities — Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot — to 10 pm to 6 am, from March 17 to March 31.
