In a desperate bid to salvage the country's energy crisis, the Sri Lankan authorities stopped late night television shows to encourage people to consume less power at night. Besides, a daily six-hour power cut has been increased to eight hours to save electricity and prevent a total blackout. Power-guzzling air conditioners and neon signs have been banned and the country has for the first time advanced the clock by one hour to daylight. The country depends heavily on hydro-electricity but as a result of poor monsoon rains earlier this year, the reservoirs have dried up.
