Waste management in Ladakh

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed all commercial units in Ladakh to set up their own decentralised sewage treatment plants. The tribunal, on April 6, 2023, asked these units to utilise treated water for gardening and other non-contact purposes.

The NGT also directed the establishment of a centralised single window mechanism for planning, capacity building and monitoring of waste management in Ladakh.

The monitoring body, headed by an officer of the rank of additional chief secretary, should have representatives from various departments.

The tribunal expressed hope that gaps in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment can be bridged at the earliest through an innovative approach and stringent monitoring.

Illegal sand mining

The NGT directed the district magistrates of Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and Kaushambi to investigate allegations of illegal sand mining on the riverbed of Yamuna. A bench of judges Adarsh Kumar Goel and Sudhir Agarwal on April 6 was responding to a petition.

Mining is being done here with the help of heavy machines and using more than 1,000 boats at various locations, the application stated. The bench noted that the matter was also raised earlier in 2021 and was disposed of in terms of the recommendations of an oversight committee.

The oversight committee said there had been many complaints regarding illegal mining in the year 2020-21, especially in districts of Prayagraj. “Mining is done without a mining plan in utter violation of environmental norms and is a grave threat to environment and ecology,” its report said.
