Single-use plastic

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the authorities of Jammu and Kashmir to file their response on banning single-use plastic in religious places in Chenab Valley, Doda district.

The tribunal was responding to a petition October 18, 2022. The petitioner had given a representation to the additional commissioner of Bhaderwa, Chenab Valley, seeking the ban. He had also sent a copy of the application to the NGT.

The tribunal directed the authorities to file their responses within two months.

Road construction

The NGT has ordered the state authorities to review whether Taradi-Dhabra Shashikhal Motar Marg in Malla Dhadhariya village in Uttarakhand requires environmental clearance.

The tribunal was responding to a petition October 19, 2022. The proposed marg (road) should not be allowed as it endangers a Naula (naturally-occurring water aquifer), the petitioner alleged. Naula is a stone-lined tank which catches dripping water from springs and streams.

The NGT listed the matter for February 15, 2023.

Illegal stone crushing

The NGT has directed the Himachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board to constitute a joint committee to look into the illegal stone crushing in Averi village, Kullu district.

The tribunal was responding to a petition October 19, 2022.

The stone-crushing units have violated environmental norms. It has caused severe environmental damage and health hazards, the petitioner alleged.

The tribunal directed the committee to visit the site and take appropriate remedial actions if needed.

Illegal constructions

The NGT has directed the additional advocate general of Uttarakhand to file a reply on the illegal constructions near the Ganga.

The tribunal was responding to a petition October 19, 2022.

Some 100-metres on either side of the Ganga falls under no-construction zone, according to a 2017 NGT order. The petitioner alleged that Swarg Aashram trust had constructed shops in the prohibited area, violating the order.

The authorities haven’t taken any action despite submitting various complaints, the petitioner added.
