latvia has decided to push for a deal on a compensation mechanism in oil pollution cases, said Andris Berzins, the country's prime minister. This decision has been taken in the wake of an oil spill from Lithuanian oil concern Mazeikiu Nafta's terminal into the Baltic Sea on March 7, 2001. Part of the oil spill has crossed into the Latvian waters and is slowly drifting towards the country's coastline. "We will demand that Lithuania takes up all possible liabilities that could be caused by coastal pollution," said Berzins. Lithuania has so far refused to sign a deal that sets out responsibilities and compensation mechanisms, saying it is already signed up the relevant international conventions.
