an environmental nightmare is how the environmentalists describe a recent proposal of British Nuclear Fuels ( bnfl ). The company plans to build an aboveground nuclear waste dump in the heart of Snowdonia National Park of North Wales. The giant building, the size of a football stadium, would store parts of a reactor from Trawsfynydd nuclear power station. The station, which is located in the park, was shut down in 1993. bnfl says it has no alternative but to build the storage facility, as there is no dump anywhere in the uk for storing intermediate level nuclear waste, which includes parts of the reactor left over when the nuclear power station was decommissioned. But this reasoning has failed to pacify the environmentalists. "Trawsfynydd shows the damaging legacy of nuclear power. The prospect of 100 years or more of nuclear storage in a national park is disgraceful. These plans must be subject to rigorous examination at a public inquiry, " said Sylvia Davies, spokesperson for the Council for National Parks, a campaign group. bnfl has already submitted its application to the park authority.
