Emission standards

the government has announced mass emission standards for motor vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2000. For passenger cars, 2.72 grams per km of carbon dioxide and 0.97 gm per km of nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon have been laid out. Under the conformity of production, the standards laid down are 3.16 gm per km of carbon monoxide and 1.33 gm per km of nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon. The emission standards have also been announced for petrol-driven two whellers and three whellers. For two wheelers, two gm of carbon monoxide and two gm of nitrogen oxide plus hydrocarbon and under conformity of production, 2.4 gm per km of carbon monoxide and 2.4 gm per km of nitrogen oxide plus hydrocarbon have been prescribed.

The permissible limit for diesel vehicles with gross weigh exceeding 3.5 tonne will be 4.5 gm for carbon monoxide, 1.1 gm fro hydrocarbon and eight gm per kilowatt hour for nitrogen oxide.
