NGT directs Gujarat to deposit Rs 75 crore to clean Ahmedabad landfill

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on July 2, 2019 directed Gujarat to transfer a sum of Rs 75 crore to an Escrow account to tackle the issue of air pollution in Ahmedabad. The issue of Pirana landfill site came to the fore as smoke continuously emanates from the municipal solid waste dump site due to landfill fires. The NGT was told that Pirana landfill was a huge source of pollution and should be dealt with as legacy waste according to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

Submit report on illegal industrial units in Jindpur village: NGT to DPCC

The NGT asked the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to submit an updated report on follow-up action and status of recovery of compensation in the case of alleged illegal discharge of effluents by industrial and other units in Jindpur village of Alipur division, GT Road, Delhi.

The DPCC and the concerned sub-divisional magistrate submitted a report on a joint inspection that found that 13 units located in residential/non-conforming areas were closed down and environmental damaged was imposed. Only one unit has deposited the amount. The compensation has been assessed at Rs 11.42 crore.

SC asks Centre to look into disinfection of aircraft through fumigation

Justice DY Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee of the SC on July 2, 2019 asked the Union government to consider the feasibility of setting up a high-powered committee, consisting of experts in the field, which would assess the benefits and hazards involved in the disinfection of aircraft through the process of fumigation. As the matter involved the issue of policy, the SC felt that the central government should look upon the matter in the first instance.
