Increase in number of forest encroachers
A Supreme Court (SC) bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta on October 4, 2019 ordered the state of Karnataka to explain the increase in the number of forest encroachers in the reserve forests of Thatkola, Sargodu and Maskali. The state also was asked to list the period during which the encroachment happened and people responsible for it.
Tree-felling in Aarey stopped for the time being
India's Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state of Maharashtra, assured the SC on October 7, 2019 that no more trees would be cut in Mumbai's Aarey Colony till the next date of hearing. The matter would be listed before the Forest Bench on October 21, 2019.
Essel Mining can resume mining in Odisha: SC
The SC on October 4, 2019 granted permission to M/s Essel Mining to resume mining in Odisha in a case related to the violation of the Mineral Concession Rules, 1960 and Mines and Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
Essel had paid the entire amount of penalty and interest according to the order of the SC. Further, the mineral-based industry had also got all clearances.
