The Supreme Court of India recently expressed concern over the growing number of industrial units in Dahanu, the 'green lung' of Mumbai. It ordered the Union government to set up an environment authority for the implementation of the coastal zone regulation notification and the regional plan to protect the ecologically sensitive area, located 150 km off the metropolis. A public interest petition filed in the court alleged that more than 380 industries including a thermal power plant, are being set up in the area. Moreover, these units do not have pollution treatment plants and have not met environmental standards.
