Nepals high level meet: Prime Minister of Nepal Madhav Kumar and his 21 cabinet ministers wore oxygen masks and heavy coats for their meeting on December 4.
The meeting, held at a height of 5,240 metres on Gorak Shep plateau near the Mount Everest base camp, was meant to draw the worlds attention to the impact of global warming on the Himalayan glaciers.The prime minister and his cabinet signed an Everest declaration at the meeting lasting 10 minutes. The declaration said the government would work to double its forest cover and that Api Nampa conservation area in Darchula district, Gaurishankar conservation area in Ramechhap and Dolakha districts and Banke National Park in Banke district would be protected areas.
The meet was inspired by the Maldives government that held its cabinet meeting under water in October to highlight the threat to low-lying islands from global warming and rising sea levels.
